On Sunday, Australia paused to honour those who had died and been injured in the theatres of war throughout our nation’s history.
Among these were countless combatants, men and women, who refused to fight due to their Christian faith, a faith that abhors violence and exhorts us to “Love one another”.
These people were known as conscientious objectors and were often ridiculed, labelled as traitors and cowards.
A well-known example of one such person was Desmond Doss, whose story was commemorated in the motion picture Hacksaw Ridge. Doss was an American who enlisted in April 1942 but refused to kill or carry a weapon in combat because of his personal beliefs as a Christian.
Doss became a medic, and while serving in the Pacific during World War II, he helped his country by saving the lives of his comrades while adhering to his religious convictions.
Doss was wounded three times during the war, and shortly before leaving the army, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, which cost him a lung. Through his outstanding bravery and unflinching determination in desperately dangerous conditions, Doss saved the lives of many soldiers. His name became a symbol throughout the 77th Infantry Division for outstanding gallantry far above and beyond the call of duty. Doss died in 2006, aged 87.
Last Friday (23 April) the College celebrated the official opening and blessing of the Alexandria Resource Centre.
Father Fabian Smith conducted the blessing ceremony and I was joined by our special guest, the Member for Melton, Mr Steve McGhie MP, for the plaque unveiling and ribbon cutting to formally mark the opening of the building. It was also wonderful to welcome back former Principal Mr Mark Sheehan and his deputies who contributed so significantly to the buildings at the College.
This building was once a hall, and some of the original elements were retained to acknowledge our past as the College grows and develops.
We are grateful for the significant support of the State Government over the past four decades, which has allowed us to expand and build such wonderful learning spaces for our students.
The naming of the Alexandria Resource Centre was certainly no arbitrary decision. Our librarian Mr Michael Hill conducted considerable research into the suitability of several proposed names. The final decision to call this wonderful new space after St Catherine of Alexandria was a highly suitable choice.
Saint Catherine was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 287AD into a noble family and was said to be well educated and a scholar. Around the age of 14, Catherine experienced a moving vision of Mary and the infant Jesus, and she decided to become a Christian.
When the Emperor Maxentius began persecuting Christians, Catherine bravely visited him to denounce his cruelty. This angered the Emperor, so he ordered Catherine to be executed on a breaking wheel, a method usually reserved for the most terrible of criminals.
When Catherine was presented before the wheel, she touched it and a miracle occurred that caused the wheel to shatter. Finally, Emperor Maxentius ordered Catherine beheaded. She was martyred in 305AD and is the patron saint of students, librarians, and philosophers.
The joy of reading helps us develop empathy and experience the personal story of others. The name of this building and the beautiful space offered to our students will undoubtedly further inspire their life-long love of learning.
Over the recent school holidays, our maintenance team took advantage of having no students on site to complete several building projects around the College.
In line with our SunSmart Policy, we continue to develop shade areas around the school.
The Year 7 area was fitted with shades over the new seating and an additional cover was installed outside the canteen.
A shelter for the Year 12 kitchenette was completed to protect from both the bitter winds, sun and rain.
Our running track was refurbished and is now ready for both Physical Education classes and student use during lunchtime activities. The high demand for volleyball courts during recess and lunch has also seen the addition of a new court.
Along with the outdoor additions, a dedicated student IT desk was added to the IT Student Reception area in the Alexandria Resource Centre.

The next Parents and Friends Association meeting will be held tomorrow, Wednesday 28 April, at 7pm in the College Conference room and will include a presentation from our new Deputy Principal of Student Wellbeing, Mrs Cheryl Bullen.
We will also seek input from the group on the naming of our College and new campus in Cobblebank. New families are always welcome.

Staff and students gathered at the College’s Lone Pine memorial yesterday (Monday 26 April) for our annual ANZAC service.
On ANZAC Day, we remember those who represented our country, fought for our freedom, and sacrificed their lives so we could live as we do today.
The ANZACs were courageous and the Australian and New Zealand soldiers’ actions during the campaign has left us all a powerful legacy.
In their memory, we should continue to embrace the qualities of the soldiers who walked before us - courage, endurance, equality, and mateship.
It is also a tradition that the College acknowledge ANZAC Day by delivering wreaths to the Bacchus Marsh and Melton RSLs, so it was my pleasure last week to visit both venues with our Student Leadership Coordinator Ms Nirasha Pandi.
We felt extremely humbled and honoured to represent the College community for such a significant day.
Annual school photos including sibling photos will be taken at the College by Arthur Reed Photos this Thursday 29 April. Registrations for family photos will close at 12pm tomorrow, Wednesday 28 April.
There is no need to return any forms or money to school.
Unique image codes will be issued to all students on the photo day so families can register online to view images when they become available in the webshop.
Registration is simple; just follow the three simple steps on your child’s personalised flyer once you receive it and remember to add the codes for all your children attending the College.
Even if you registered last year, it is important that you do it again this year using your child’s 2021 image code to link their images for the current year with your contact details. If your child misplaces their code, they can contact our customer service team on 5243 4390.
When images are ready to view and in the webshop, all parents who have registered will be notified by SMS and email.
Once registered, please wait for notification that 2021 images are online to view before making your purchase.
CRC Melton will host the 2021 Youth Engagement Forum in partnership with Melton City Council on Friday.
The forum will focus on health and wellbeing. Students from Year 7 to 12 will participate in activities to discuss their ideas and personal experiences. These will be used to inform the Council and Wellbeing Plan for 2021 to 2025.

Establishing good study skills in the junior years of secondary school will help set your child up for success in their senior years.
To help you guide and support your child’s studies at home, the College will host a Junior Study Skills and Media Presentation night for parents and guardians of students in Year 7 to 9 on Tuesday 4 May.
Guest speaker Darren Pereira will provide practical advice to parents and guardians on topics such as developing a study plan, improving time management skills and creating a positive learning environment at home.
The recent introduction of Time Assessment Tasks (TATs) in Year 7 and 8 makes this presentation particularly useful and important – helping your child prepare for these and other assessments will undoubtedly make them less stressful and build on the skills they are gaining in the classroom.
The information Darren shares with you on the night will complement the study skill sessions our Year 7 and Year 8 students completed last term with Elevate Education.
As well as focussing on study skills, Darren will discuss the importance of setting boundaries around the use of social media. His strategies will help you become more aware of what and who your child is engaging with online.
The Junior Study Skills and Media Presentation night will be held in our Performing Arts Centre at 7pm.
This interactive session will enable you to ask questions and empower you to best support your child.

Last Thursday, 22 April, we successfully held our annual CRC Athletics Carnival.
After being washed out in 2019 and cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, we were beyond excited to finally get back onto the track this year.
Our Year 12 students opened the carnival in style with their creative dress-ups in house colours. They paraded down the 100m straight to showcase their costumes.
Students participated in a range of track, field and novelty events on the day. The competition was fierce among all age groups.
The results for our 2021 Athletics Carnival will be announced to students later this week during morning homeroom. Well done to all who participated.
Our house leaders also selected two students from each house as our Athletics MVP’s. These students demonstrated high levels of participation, sportsmanship and team spirit. Our 2021 MVP’s will be announced at our next school assembly.
A special mention to Miss Lauren Whitford, one of our Year 8 Coordinators and Year 9 student Anna Aguirre who cut their hair on the day to raise funds for the Do It For Cancer campaign run by our Social Justice Coordinator, Miss Emma Van Wees.
The school’s fundraising total reached a whopping $4000, putting us in the state’s top five Cancer Council fundraising teams. A big thank you to everyone who donated. Future fundraising this term will also go to the Cancer Council.
I’d also like to thank our student leaders and Student Leadership Coordinator Miss Nirasha Pandi for their excellent work in organising and running our BBQ on the day.
Entries are now open for the CRC Melton 2021 Hildegarde Literary Prize and this year’s topic is Chasing Happiness.
Students are invited to submit short stories, poems or articles by 4pm Friday 4 June.
Some of our past students achieved great success in this competition - Sarah Clewer won prizes three years in a row, while Khallia Vanguardia won the best-in-competition prize in Year 7.
This year we are changing the requirements, so please read carefully!
The competition has a Junior category (Year 7 to 9) and a Senior category (Year 10 to 12) and prizes will be award to a junior and senior winners and runners up. Winners will be announced on Wednesday 14 July.

The Parish of Melton has begun its special Lectio Divina Series - Breaking down the Word of God.
The series will run every Wednesday, concluding on 26 May. The sessions will break down the Word of God for the following weekend mass.
Each session commences in the Parish Meeting Room after Wednesday morning mass, approximately 9.45am.

On Thursday 20 May, the City of Melton will host a Community Road Safety Forum, targeting new or younger drivers between the age of 16 – 21 and their parent and guardians.
The forum will include guest speakers from Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and the Road Trauma Support Services who will talk about the rules of the road, and share some life experiences about being involved in, or responding to traffic accidents.
Every young driver who attends will go in the draw to win free driving lessons and other prizes.
