Weekly Reflection

Families are the glue that hold our communities together.

CatholicCare offers support to keep family relationships strong in hard times and helps families and kids during relationship breakdowns.

“Over and over again, we see that family bonds are essential for the stability of relationships in society, for the work of education, and for integral human development, for they are inspired by love, responsible intergenerational solidarity, and mutual trust. These are factors that can make even the most adverse situations more bearable and bring a spirit of trust fraternity to our world, enabling it to feel as a single family, where the greatest attention is paid to those most in need.” Pope Francis - from his address to the United Nations, Clementine Hall, 2013.

Loving God of all,

You have given all peoples one common origin. It is your will that they be gathered together as one family in Yourself. Fill the hearts of all humanity with the fire of your love and with the desire to ensure justice for all.

By sharing the good things You give us, may we secure equality for all people throughout the world. May there be an end to division, strife and war. May there be a dawning of a truly human society built on love and peace. Make us your instrument to bring about life to the full of all families through our words and actions. We ask this in the name of St Joseph, your son Jesus, and Mary our good Mother.

Amen

From the Principal

I hope that our mothers and all those who are carers had a wonderful day on Sunday.

This year we keep in our prayers and thoughts all mothers who have fled Ukraine with their children, many leaving behind husbands to fight for freedom. We pray that peace will soon be a reality for all those involved in war across our world.

In a Catholic school, we often talk about our point of difference. One thing often mentioned is the development of the whole person spiritually, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. This week we celebrate many physical endeavours undertaken by our students.

Following their success at the SACCSS Swimming Carnival last term, four of our students were selected to compete in yesterday’s Victorian Schools Associations Competition (VSAC) run by Swimming Victoria at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Congratulations to Oliver Dreaver (Year 8), Jack Morrow (Year 9), Marlee Leetham (Year 10) and James Morrow (Year 12). Look out for the results in next week’s newsletter.

Year 12 student Liam Machado will represent Victoria at the Australian Gymnastics Championships in Queensland this month after he and his partner placed first in the Level 7 Mixed Pairs at the National Acrobatic Gymnastics Trials in March. We wish Liam and his team all the very best of luck.

Last week a team of athletes competed at the SACCSS Cross Country with Year 7 student Harlow Lesko notching up a win in the 13 Year Junior Girls category. Well done to Harlow and all students who trained at lunchtime to prepare for the event and were outstanding representatives of our College. You can read all about the day here.

Another annual sporting opportunity at the College is the Runnalls Cup. Each year the students from CRC Melton compete against students from CRC Sydenham in a memorial AFL match. Bruce Runnall was a Deputy Principal at CRC Melton and became Principal at CRC Sydenham. Our students played with spirit and determination last Friday but were beaten by a better side on the day.

Our newsletter and social media pages regularly feature sports updates on the many options available to students who wish to explore physical development at the College as part of a well-rounded education.

I remind families that our College Athletics Carnival will be held at the Bridge Rd Athletics Track next Thursday 19 May where there promises to be some fantastic competition among our teams. I invite you to come along on the day to watch and support the students as they vie for house points.

Permission requests have been sent to all parents and guardians and we ask that you login to PAM as soon as possible to provide permission for your child to attend. You can read more about this here.

From the Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing

Last night, Martin Heppell from The Resilience Project shared stories and strategies for parents and guardians during a webinar focusing on gratitude, empathy and mindfulness (GEM) as the basis for improved wellbeing among our young people.

On Tuesday 31 May, teaching staff will participate in their second Resilience Project workshop for 2022 titled Looking out for each other.

This week’s presentation from the Resilience Project’s Parent Hub looks at mindfulness. Mindfulness is our ability to be calm and present at any given moment. We practice this by slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time.

Thousands of studies have shown the proven benefits of mindfulness, including reduced stress, reduced rumination, increased memory, increased cognitive function, and physical health benefits through improved immunity.

Mindfulness can be practised through meditation, yoga, flow-states and daily activities such as cooking, art, walking. Source: UC Berkeley, Greater Good Science, American Psychological Association.

NAPLAN 2022

Students in Year 7 and Year 9 began NAPLAN tests online this week.

The test window is from 10 to 20 May and students are using their devices (laptop for Year 7, iPad for Year 9) to access the tests. The NAPLAN tests are adaptive, allowing a more accurate prediction of student achievement.

A reminder that all students must bring their fully charged device, earphones/earbuds and pen or pencil to all assessments throughout the NAPLAN testing program.

The Lock Down Browser icon has been installed on all devices. Students are not permitted to remove it. Year 9 students with iPads can click NAP Locked down browser on the App Store (apple.com) to install the Locked Down Browser, if they have removed it from their device.

The ACARA demonstration site (https://nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) allows public access for parents and guardians, teachers and students to familiarise themselves with the platform.

Year 12, 2012 Reunion

Calling all students from the class of Year 12, 2012!

It has been 10 years since the first Year 12 students graduated from the College – are you part of this special cohort or do you know someone that was?

The College plans to establish a committee of past students to organise a celebration later this year to mark the occasion.

For more details, please email our Director of Community Relations, Amy Rowley at arowley@sfcc.vic.edu.au

SACCSS Cross Country

Last Tuesday, 3 May, a team of students headed out to Brimbank Park to compete in the SACCSS Cross Country Competition. Unlike previous years, we were blessed with fantastic weather, which created a positive atmosphere for our runners.

All students represented the school with pride and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and drive throughout their races.

Special mention to the following students who earned a place in the top three in their respective events:

1st place - Harlow Lesko – (pictured above, from left Grace, Isabella, Harlow and Tanae) 13 Year Girls 3km race

2nd Place - Damian Steyn (pictured top left) 14 Year Boys 3km race

3rd Place - Jackson Wright (pictured top right) 15-16 Year Intermediate Boys 4km race

We thank all staff who volunteered on the day and those who ran and supervised lunchtime training in Term 1 and 2.

Drama Performances

Our Year 10, 11 and 12 Drama students performed their climate change and conspiracy theory ensembles to a live audience in our Performing Arts Centre last week.

After a term of creation and many rehearsals, the performances were outstanding, showcasing the many talents of our students. They  should be so proud of what they achieved.

Alongside this, VCE Drama students attended a live performance of Slap, Bang, Kiss in Drysdale last Wednesday, which they will analyse as part of their studies. The students were inspired by the themes and messages in the performance and are looking forward to discussing these in class.

2022 Hildegard Literary Prize

Students are invited to enter CRC Melton’s annual writing competition, the Hildegard Literary Prize.

This year’s topic is Imagine If and students are welcome to submit any form of text such as a short story, poetry, reflection, report etc up to a maximum of 1400 words.

There will be a Senior Prize for students in Year 10 to 12 and a Junior Prize for those in Year 7 to 9.

All entries should be in a Microsoft Word document and emailed to me at cfox@sfcc.vic.edu.au. The writer’s name should not appear in the document – blind judging by a panel will determine the winners. The judges’ decision is final.

Entries close on Friday 3 June and the winners will be announced in the last week of Term 2. Winning entries will be published in the 2022 Shared Stories Anthology and in the 2022 College Yearbook.

For advice on how to get started, students are welcome to contact me or our English Domain Leader Ms Kezi Todd.

Tote-ally amazing totes

A wonderful collection of tote bags, bunting decorations, scrunchies and pillows have been created by Year 8 Textiles students, many of whom had never touched a sewing machine before this year!

After learning how to operate the machines safely, students eagerly got sewing adding their own personal flair to their tote bags by tie-dying the material and attaching their names using iron on vinyl, giving the bags a very professional final look.

Our next task calls on students to tap into their design skills and create of a plush monster toy. We can't wait to see what they come up with!

Mother’s Day Liturgy and Breakfast

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Thursday morning for our inaugural Mother’s Day liturgy and breakfast.

It was wonderful to see so many mums, grandmothers and special adults, many of whom said how much they enjoyed being on-site and meeting other parents.

We hope everyone had a fantastic day on Sunday.

Senior Volleyball

Last week our senior volleyball teams played their final round of the season before the grand finals.

Our boys volleyball team started off the week with a win against rivals CRC Sydenham. The game went well into overtime, pushing into five sets, with all players displaying grit and stamina throughout. This win has put our team into the grand final, which will be played today. We wish them luck!

Our girls volleyball team also played their final round, ending the season with an unfortunate loss to Kolbe Catholic College 0 -3. Our senior girls showed commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season and fought to the very end.

Runnalls Cup

Last Friday our Senior AFL teams headed out to Arnolds Creek to meet rivals CRC Sydenham for the annual Runnalls Cup match.

The Runnalls Cup is a significant senior AFL match between the two schools that honours Mr Bruce Runnalls, a former Deputy Principal of CRC Melton and former Principal of CRC Sydenham. Bruce was an avid AFL supporter who sadly passed away in 2011.

Although our teams did not come home with a win this year, it was an enjoyable commemorative day. We thank all staff from CRC Melton and Sydenham who came along to support the students and their respective Colleges. We look forward to continuing to honour Bruce in the years to come.
